Dear Ms. Ness:
I am writing this message to voice my support for
the two recent proposals regarding the establishment of regulations and
licencing for low-power radio. The easing of restrictions on major broadcasting
has not had the effect intended and has become detrimental to the development
of competition within the radio market. This is evident in the consolidations
of various broadcasting corporations. The sad fact is that the radio
markets are gradually turning into corporate monopolies. This means that
radio stations cannot focus on the local issues and
tastes, but rather they must focus on maintaining the profit income
of their parent companies. This is why I would like to support the forming
of rules allowing small, local radio stations to broadcast, thus giving
common people a voice in the radio market. I can think of no better way
to encourage community involvement and free exchange of ideas than to allow
local neighborhoods, schools, and small towns to have a voice on the airwaves.
Many of the concerns mentioned by you and your colleagues can be easily
addressed (interference, content restrictions). The bottom line is that
there is a lot of free space on the airwaves and that it would be wrong
and unconstitutional to simply allow it to be controlled by corporations.
Thank you for your continuing support.
Sincerly,
Michael Mayer
